As convenient and efficient as a gas fireplace is, it requires a little attention to ensure it remains safe and trouble-free.
The BC safety authority recommends having your gas fireplace professionally inspected and serviced at least once a year.
A professional annual inspection includes :
-Clean glass and unit according to the manufacturer’s guidelines.
-Check the entire vent system and termination for condition and operation
-An inspection of the explosion relief flappers and glass door gaskets to ensure a proper seal
-Inspection of the burner, venturi, and air openings
-Inspection of the gas valve, gas components, and pilot system Refer to the manufactures manual to ensure proper log placement
-Verify correct operation of all optional equipment; fans, thermostats, remote, control, safeties etc.
-Keep the fireplace area clear and free of combustible materials, flammables or items that could be damaged from high heat.
-Cleaning the burners and pilot light assembly
-The flue is also closely inspected to spot loose connections and leaks, obstructions such as bird’s nests and leaves, and cleaned to remove dangerous soot.
Another good practice is installing a carbon monoxide detector, in addition to smoke detectors, and replacing the batteries during an annual safety inspection. Routine maintenance and repair will ensure your gas fireplace keeps you cozy and comfortable for years to come.
Fireplace manufacturers, Fire Departments, Insurance Companies all recommend annual inspections and maintenance by a qualified technician.
